Abstract

Ephrem the Syrian's fifth hymn from the cycle on the crucifixion of Christ is translated and discussed with regard to its textual strategy. It is argued that polarities formed by, inter alia, the symbolic interpretation of the passion narrative and by the role accorded to the social values of honour and shame in the description of the crucifixion are used by Ephrem to convey a strong sense of the existence of coherence, balance and meaning in the way in which Christ was treated on the via dolorosa.
