NB: to Syrian Orthodox ܟܝܢܐ (kyana) is very close in meaning to ܩܢܘܡܐ (qnoma); but to Church of the East ܟܝܢܐ (kyana) is very close in meaning to ܐܘܣܝܐ ܠܐܝܬܘܬܐ (ousia / ’ithutha), while ܩܢܘܡܐ (qnoma) almost has the sense of “particularity” (Syrian Orthodox ܕܝܠܝܬܐ (dilayta)). For general developments in translation practice see “Towards a History of Syriac Translation Technique”, in Studies in Syriac christianity: history, literature and theology, Aldershot: Variorum, 2001.
